Types of Massage

There are so many different types of massage available, how do you know which one is right for you?

Swedish massage is a more medium pressure massage. This type of massage consists of long, gliding strokes, kneading and compression of tissues using medium pressure to produce a profound state of relaxation. Its main benefits are stress reduction, calming the nervous system, lymphatic drainage, and increasing circulation. It is good for people who have a lot of stress.

Deep Tissue massage. This type of massage involves slow, deep strokes and heavy pressure. Different parts of hand are used, the fist, elbow, forearm, thumbs to apply deeper pressure. It is good for people who have a lot of muscle tension and pain.

Sports Massage. This type of massage uses deep pressure, compression and stretches that focus on the affected areas to quicken recovery, aid in removal of lactic acid, and enhance performance, and is therefore, good for athletes.

Hot Stone massage. This type of massage uses heated stones which are used to massage the body to loosen muscles and induce a feeling of relaxation and groundedness. This is a more medium pressure massage; however it can be combined with deeper work. It is great for people who have a lot of stress and like heat.

Reiki is not massage but a form of energy work. It involves the laying of hands over each energy center in the body while energy is directed into the area to promote healing. It induces a trance-like state of relaxation and meditation. Its main benefits are deep relaxation and balancing of the energy centers (chakras). Click here for more information about Reiki.

Prenatal Massage. This type of massage is a gentle massage for the mother to be. Focuses on relaxation and easing of aches and pains, preventing edema, and increasing circulation. It is not recommended during the first trimester. The massage is done with the woman on her side and sitting up.

Reflexology is a pressure point massage done on the feet based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, which correspond to every part of the body. Some conditions that reflexology can help are Allergies

Headaches, Digestive problems such as constipation, Stress, and Colds and congestion. It calms and balances the entire body. It is also good for people with foot pain.

Stretching. I have developed a full body stretching routine that I formulated after years of research. I have always felt as a massage therapist that people do not stretch enough so I forumulated this routine to address that . This can be done as a separate treatment or after a massage. Its main benefits are increase in range or motion, reduction of pain, and release of stored emotions. At the end of the session, the recipient will feel as if they have done an hour of yoga. It is great for people who feel stiff, have limited range or motion and muscle pain. Click here to learn more about Stretching.
